Key takeaways

  • Local SEO also pays off for companies that work nationwide, but differently than for retail stores.
  • The Google Business Profile is the most effective free measure and is usually left half filled out.
  • A location page is not a place name in the title, but a page with real local content.
  • In B2B, local SEO rarely brings volume, but the inquiries are above average.

Why local SEO matters even for nationwide business

The objection is understandable: we work across Germany, why should we optimize for one city?

Three reasons.

People search locally, even if they don't have to buy locally. Adding a city is the natural way for many people to search for a service provider, not because proximity is necessary, but because it reduces the number of results.

Local searches have little competition. The basic term is fiercely contested nationwide. With a location added, there are often only a handful of providers, and the position can be reached in weeks instead of years.

Proximity creates trust. Even with purely remote collaboration, a provider from the region feels more tangible. For the first contact, that counts more than you might think.

The mistake is not being locally visible. The mistake would be narrowing your general pages down to the location. Then you lose nationwide visibility for a small local gain. The solution is separation: general pages stay general, and a dedicated local page is added.

The test for a location page

Read your location page and ask: Could you swap the place name without the text becoming wrong? Then it isn't a real local page. A good location page sits alongside the general pages and shows what makes you tangible in that region.

Setting up your Google Business Profile properly

The profile is free and the most effective single measure for local visibility. Most profiles are about forty percent filled out.

What needs to be complete: company name exactly as in the legal notice, main category and matching secondary categories, full address, phone number, website, opening hours, a description of 750 characters.

What makes the difference:

The services as separate entries, not just in the body text. Each service with its own description.

Photos, added regularly. Profiles with current images are demonstrably clicked more often. Office building, team, work situations, no stock photos.

Posts, every two to four weeks. A short note about a project, an award, an article. This signals activity.

Questions and answers. You are allowed to post and answer questions yourselves. Use this for the three questions prospects always ask.

Important: the name must be identical everywhere, in the profile, in the legal notice, in directories. Deviations weaken the association.

What makes a real location page

A location page that consists of the general service page with the place name swapped out doesn't work. Google recognizes the pattern, and so do visitors.

What a location page needs:

A reason for it to exist. An office, a local team, a catchment area, projects in the region.

Local case studies. Two or three clients from the region, by name, with the project. That is the content no other page has.

Specific details. Address, directions, contact person with a photo, availability. An embedded map.

Regional context. Economic structure, typical industries, what companies there deal with. A paragraph that shows you know the area.

Its own title. With the service and location, under 60 characters.

Rule of thumb: if you could use the same page for another city by just swapping the place name, it is too thin. Better one good location page than five empty ones.

Directories and mentions

Directory listings seem old-fashioned, but they are still relevant, for two reasons.

They confirm to search engines that you exist and where. And they are one of the sources generative systems draw information about companies from.

The basic setup: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), one or two industry directories that are actually used in your field.

What counts is consistency. Name, address and phone number must be written identically everywhere, including legal form, abbreviations and the spelling of the street. Deviations are the most common reason why local association doesn't work.

What doesn't count: a hundred listings on random portals. Ten clean listings in relevant directories have more effect than a hundred in link farms, which are ignored anyway.

One afternoon is enough to set up and standardize the basic setup.

Reviews in B2B

In B2B, reviews are underestimated because nobody believes business customers read them. They do, just later in the process than in B2C.

The typical sequence: someone finds you, reads the website, then checks what others say. At this point, it is decided whether they send an inquiry.

Three points make the difference.

The number counts more than the average. Five reviews at 5.0 look weaker than ninety at 4.8, because the second number is more credible.

Responses to every review, including positive ones. That shows someone is paying attention. Stay factual with critical reviews. The response is written for the people reading along, not for the author.

Asking. The only reliable way to get reviews is to ask for them after the project is completed, with a direct link. If you don't ask, you only get reviews from the dissatisfied.

A fixed step in the project wrap-up is enough to reach double digits within a year.

What realistically comes out of it

Local SEO in B2B doesn't bring waves of visitors. It brings a few well-matched inquiries, and faster than nationwide optimization.

Realistic timeline: the business profile takes effect within weeks. A location page needs two to four months to reach a stable position. Directory listings work slowly and in the background.

Realistic order of magnitude: for a service provider in a mid-sized city, one to five additional inquiries per month is a good result. That sounds like little, but with a five-figure project value, it is the most economical channel of all.

How to measure: in the business profile, views, calls and direction requests. In Search Console, terms with a location reference, filtered by your location page.

One final note: leave the general pages general. A homepage optimized for one city loses nationwide reach, and for supraregional business, that is the more valuable part.
